Crafting Your Classic Yacht
Embarking on the journey of creating or restoring a classic yacht is an exceptional adventure. Whether acquiring a classic yacht in need of restoration, or crafting a new design inspired by tradition, G.L. Watson & Co. ensures your experience is seamless, personalised, and deeply rewarding. Here is how we bring your vision to life.
Step 1: Concept Development
Every journey begins with understanding your vision. We collaborate with you, along with your family or team, to bring your dreams to the drawing board. Starting with a Concept Design, we define the key features of your classic yacht. Whether restoring an existing vessel or designing a new one from scratch, this stage identifies your aspirations and establishes a philosophy that will guide the entire process. From here, we shape a concept that balances your desires with historical authenticity and practicality.
Step 2: Preliminary Design to Shipbuilding Agreement
After laying the conceptual foundation, we work together to develop detailed preliminary designs. These include key technical drawings that reflect your vision for the yacht’s exterior, layout, and style of living spaces. We also identify the yacht's performance requirements, amenities, and quality standards and set these out in a comprehensive Specification. These drawings and the specification that will form the foundation of a binding Shipbuilding Agreement. We also work on legal agreements that outline the responsibilities of all involved, ensuring that every aspect of the project is clear and ready for the next phase.
Step 3: Detailed Design & Construction
With solid, technical, legal and financial foundations the exciting part begins—bringing the yacht to life. We supply Detailed Designs to the selected shipyard which translates these into Production Drawings which we review to ensure adherence to the design and quality requirements. This process covers every aspect of the vessel from steelwork to joinery. We provide continuous input to the shipyard, sharing our classic expertise and refining details. This process involves a lot of back-and-forth, but each iteration ensures that your yacht will be a true masterpiece, realised with impeccable craftsmanship.
Owner Representation & Project Management
To ensure your project stays on track, G.L. Watson & Co. offers Owner Representation services throughout the journey. From liaising with the shipyard and overseeing construction, to managing changes and participating in inspections, our team represents your interests and ensures that every milestone is met to the highest standard. We streamline the coordination between the shipyard, suppliers, and any other parties, reducing complexities and ensuring a smooth path to the launch of your new or restored vessel.
