History
Built by Adam’s yard at Gourock, Gipsy & Brunette were 26ft overall and 23ft on the waterline. They were intended by thread baron James Coats Jnr to be a private One Design class. To ensure that the boats would be as evenly matched as possible, Coats insisted that they were built using alternate planks from the same logs. Having enjoyed just about every type of yacht imaginable, Coats relished in the time he spent racing these two elegant sister ships. During the season the two cutters could be seen out racing on the Clyde nearly every weekend and Watson himself was a frequent guest skipper.
Classic Yacht Replica
Over 120 years after they were built, the design perfectly met one of our current client’s requirements for an exciting classic day racer. Thanks to the conservation of original drawings and data in the company’s Archive, the Design Department created a set of drawings that enabled the construction of Gwell, the third yacht to be built to the design. Gwell was launched in the autumn of 2019.

Taransay illustrates what can be achieved by combining yacht design from the classic period with modern construction.
