A call alerting us to the imminent destruction of the 1929 M Class Avatar (ex-Pursuit) prompted immediate action. Designed by W. Starling Burgess and built by Abeking & Rasmussen this 25M cutter is the last substantially intact member of a class designed to the Universal Rule and only one size down from the J Class.
A client of ours immediately saw the potential and we acted for him in acquiring the yacht. Thereafter we commissioned a substantial shipping cradle to ensure her safe transport. A move by barge across San Fracisco harbour was arranged to meet with a container ship that would transport her below deck to Le Havre. Following her arrival there onward overland transport was arranged to Britanny, a complex task with a vessel that was at the absolute maximum size for road transport.
During the transport period we undertook extensive research to obtain all the key original drawings and technical documentation as well as a substantial collection of early photographs. All of this assisting the design work now being undertaken to facilitate the restoration.
