About this projectWhen G.L. Watson & Co. were given the task of designing the Owner’s Motor Launch for its latest classic yacht restoration project Malahne, it was intended from the outset to be an exceptional craft.
The design office’s first foray into fast craft design for over 30 years may have appeared a daunting task, however with existing knowledge of the client’s requirements and application of the firm’s well known attention to detail in both design and material selection, the envelope of this fast launch quickly developed.
Drawing design influences from English and American power boats contemporary to the launch of Malahne in the late 1930’s, the varnished mahogany topsides and sparkling chrome fittings which adorn the hull give the launch a pleasingly familiar appearance.
The boat’s classic appearance, however belies the interior and workings of this modern super yacht tender. Designed to reach a top speed of 35 knots, the strip plank and veneered hull is driven by a modern Steyr Marine diesel engine via an outdrive leg rather than a shaft. Modern instruments including a GPS plotter and engine control unit are hidden from view behind a pop-up panel in the centre of the quilted maple dashboard, leaving if desired only the chrome analogue dials on display.
Features such as centreline lifting points for davits and a port side boarding ladder integrate this launch into the design of Malahne; making her a truly unique classic superyacht tender. These features along with upholstery and timber choices consistent with those on the mothership complete this complementary addition to the classic yachting experience aboard Malahne.
